Book Review: “Unfu*K Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life” by Gary John Bishop

Welcome to Player One Finance, this week’s book review is on Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Life by Gary John Bishop

The main reason this is my first blog post is that like many of you I doubt myself. How many of us have been wanting to do anything in life, but the biggest obstacle is ourselves? We become consumed by all the negative thoughts of how we see ourselves. We have this story in our heads which we made up, always on repeat.

We tell ourselves things like “I'm never good enough,” “I'm a failure,” “I’m such a loser,'' “ I don’t deserve to be loved,”  “I will never be successful.”

I doubted I could make a successful blog. “Who the hell am I to start a blog? I’m not a writer and no one will care what I got to say.” In the past, I tried starting a blog, but had no direction and gave up. Even with a plan this time, all the self-doubts prevented me from starting Player One Finance at the beginning of 2020 and also at the beginning of this year.

The book aims at helping us get out of our heads through assertive language, instead of using positive self-talk. Gary John Bishop goes through seven assertions, each one having its own individual chapter. I like how you can go back to the chapters on the assertions which speak to you.

The three assertions which I want to focus on in this blog and in my life are

  • I got this.

  • I embrace the uncertainty.

  • I am not my thoughts, I am what I do.

I bought this book a few years ago on audible and then I purchased the kindle version. I enjoy listening to the audible book more though since the author is Scottish, and I just like his voice. I have listened to and read this book a few times, but I never took the action to implement what I got from this book in my life. I let myself stay in my own bubble of self-doubts.

Part of the book wants you to take responsibility for your failures, accept that they happened but realize they don't define you. You can always take the actions to change your life if you decide to. But the main thing is taking action. We will always have doubts here and there, overcome them, and have new ones, but through taking the steps to pursue the life we want, we won't let them stop us.

I accept the failures of my previous blogs, but I won’t let that stop me from building up Player One Finance. I know I can do this, I got this! There will always be setbacks, but I'm going to continue moving forward and take the steps to reach financial independence to support my family, travel the world, and enjoy the things I like without worrying about money or work.

I’m going to stop procrastinating or waiting for the perfect moment to improve myself. It's going to take time to build the life I want, but it's all about taking those first steps.

One thing I wished he would mention is how to use assertions in your everyday life. I already know based on previous books and videos that assertions or affirmations work by repetition by writing the statement several times, saying it out loud, or in your head. Through repetition, you're changing your mindset, which helps you take action in the direction you want your life to be. But in the end action is the key thing.

So I am going to write each assertion 5 times a day for a month, and hopefully get back to you guys and let you know how it went. I would recommend this book if you ever feel stuck.

Memorable quote

“It’s not that you have to find the answer, you are the answer.”
